Mercury in Fish Prompt Broader N.Y. Ban
The New York state Health Department has broadened its advisories warning women of childbearing age and children younger than 15 not to eat most species of fish caught anywhere in the Adirondacks and Catskills, because of the levels of mercury found in the fish. Previously the advisories were issued only for those sample stretches of water which had been tested and found to be contaminated, but virtually all stretches tested have been found to be contaminated.
Last Leg of Canadian Seal Hunt Begins
Canada's seal hunt has resumed after a spell of bad weather. Quotas are set for the hunt, which nets Canada $16.5 million from sales of pelts. The main customers are Norway, Denmark and China; the USA bans importation of seal products. Protesters condemn the practice as barbaric.
